Star Wars Weekend
Photo Gallery
Date: April 21st & 22nd
Venue: The Marriott Hotel, Gosforth Park
David Prowse aka Darth Vader, who is now in his 70s, travelled up to the North East from Devon, for a Star Wars weekend that allowed people the chance to meet and greet the cult star and bid for exclusive Star Wars memorabilia.
2007 is the celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars film. Alan Dobson and Danny Mitchell, of Up Close Events wanted to use the opportunity to raise money for the Sunshine Fund.
On Saturday 21st April guests attended 'An Evening with Darth Vader' at the Gosforth Park Marriott Hotel. They were greeted and searched by Stormtroopers and then enjoyed a three course meal and an entertaining and insightful talk by David Prowse who relayed stories of his first jobs and his role as the Green Cross Code man, as well as his time playing Darth Vader. The raffle and auction raised much needed cash for the Sunshine Fund as, courtesy of local artist, Keith Talbot, there were some fabulous pictures and prints on offer.
The next day, hundreds of north east families came to the Gosforth Marriott to meet and greet David Prowse. The UK Garrison entertained guests, dressed up in authentic Storm Troooper outfits, and there was even a Bounty Hunter and a rather menacing Darth Vader!
David Prowse is flattered that Star Wars is still as popular with children today as it was thirty years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed his time in the North East.
