Celebrity Question of Sport 2006

Date: 15th Nov 2006
Venue: The Marriott Hotel, Gosforth Park
In November, sporting legends past and present joined forces with business leaders across the region at the Gosforth Park Marriott Hotel to compete in a special Question of Sport evening. Among those taking part were Newcastle United’s Peter Beardsley, Steve Harper, Steven Taylor and Peter Ramage as well as Niall Quinn and a whole host of Newcastle Falcons players.
The winner of one of the raffle prizes caused quite a stir. Up for grabs were four executive tickets to see Newcastle United play West Ham. As Sky Sports presenter and ex-Scottish football international Alan McInally announced the winning number there was some embarrassment as Sunderland winger Tobias Hysen’s number came out. He very generously asked for a redraw!
Elsewhere on a star-studded night, everyone got the last photo in the picture round right – except for one. Ex-Sunderland star Kevin Ball’s table caused amusement by failing to recognise a very young Paul Gascoigne.
And there was a battle in the auction between Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn, pictured, and Newcastle United defender Peter Ramage for two shirts signed by Pele. The Magpie came out on top, contributing £2,000 to a night which raised £31,000, but we suspect he got a little bit of help from his friend as fellow defender Steven Taylor was seen leaving with one of the framed shirts under his arm!
