Sunshine Run 2006
Date: 5th July 2006
Venue: Newcastle Gateshead Quayside
MORE than 500 generous Geordies took part in the fifth Sunshine Run. Competitors of all ages were out in force for the event, which started on Newcastle's quayside and finished by the Baltic art gallery.
And some even turned out in fancy dress, with nuns’ costumes and giant bee outfits on show.
Anna Wilson, 24, of North Shields, took part. She said: “I think this is a brilliant event. “I didn't do much training and I’m shattered now but it’s all worth it because it’s a fantastic atmosphere.
The race was started by double Paralympic champion Stephen Miller, of Cramlington, Northumberland.
The runners made their way along the 5km course, which traces the banks of the River Tyne before crossing the Millennium Bridge to finish on Baltic Square.
Alan McVey, 37, of Newcastle city centre, said: “This is the second time I’ve done the run. The whole family do it and we enjoy it - this is my best time so far. “The charity is close to our hearts and something we care about so that makes it all worthwhile.”
Chronicle editor Paul Robertson waited at the finish line to welcome the runners. He said: “This is always a fantastic event. Thankfully we have had great weather this year after the rain last year. Well done to everyone who took part.”
