Big Al gets in swing of our golf day
TOON legend Alan Shearer has proved he can turn his talent to more than football. Alan was the driving force behind a golf day at Gosforth Golf Club, Newcastle, to raise money for the Chronicle’s Sunshine Fund.
The charity pays for equipment for children with disabilities and life-threatening illnesses.
Amateur golfers from across the North East clubbed together to compete in the Cellular Solutions Golf Day.
There was a mouth-watering series of incentives for budding Tiger Woods, as the winners of the three handicap categories will be heading to Las Vegas to play on some of the world’s premier courses.
Participants paid £10 to enter a “Hit the Green” contest, starting at the 16th hole. Anyone reaching the green with their tee shot won a prize and all the money collected went towards the Sunshine Fund.
Mike Bowers, managing director of Cellular Solutions, said: “Our annual golf day is primarily a thank-you to our customers and an opportunity to raise money for the Sunshine Fund.
“We hope to have raised £1,000, which Cellular Solutions will match.
“The play was challenging, especially after players got caught in the rain for an hour or so.
“But the chance of a trip to Las Vegas and having Alan Shearer on the course meant everyone upped their game.”
The Sunshine Fund was granted charitable status in 1995 when the Chronicle backed the cause and joined forces with the Community Foundation.
More than £700,000 has been raised for essential equipment to improve the quality of children’s lives since we adopted it.
Sunshine Fund manager Jo Harris said it was a very enjoyable day despite the rain.
She said: “We were delighted with the massive amount of support we received for the Cellular Solutions golf event.
“The money raised will enable us to continue our vital work in improving the lives of disabled and seriously ill children in the North East.”
