Hundreds prepare to run for our charity

FUNDRAISERS are getting set to put on their running shoes and help improve the lives of sick and disabled children. Hundreds of fun-runners and trained athletes from throughout the North East will be running, jogging or walking the 5km Sunshine Run on Wednesday, July 2. The popular riverside run, which begins at 7pm outside the Pitcher and Piano on St Ann’s Quay, raises cash for the Chronicle’s Sunshine Fund. The route passes the Copthorne Hotel and heads up towards Newcastle Business Park before doubling back to cross the Millennium Bridge, finishing in Baltic Square.

An impressive team of 19 workers from engineering firm Mott MacDonald are among those getting involved. Team member Marie Carroll said: “We did really enjoy it last year so we thought we do it again and get more people involved just to try to raise a bit more money. “It’s a really nice distance to do because if you don’t want to run it you don’t have to. Our group is mixed so I imagine some will walk and some will run and some might do a bit of both! “I am looking forward to it and I’m sure a lot of our colleagues will come down to support us so it should be a really good event for everyone.”

Also donning their running vest for the charity is the R & B event group, which has put forward five runners and is entering the event for the first time this year.
One of the runners, Chris Marshall, said that he felt comfortable doing the distance but the level of competitiveness among his colleagues might tempt him to put in a bit of secret training to give him the edge. “I’ll definitely be keeping it a secret, though,” he joked. The 5km Sunshine Run is the flagship event in the Sunshine Fund’s calendar and sees hundreds of people hit the Quayside.

Jo Harris, Sunshine Fund manager, said: “We are always delighted to have big teams enter and are pleased to have both repeat entries from teams that have done the run before and new groups who will being doing their first run this year. It will be a great day and we are really looking forward to it.”
